No one likes having heartburn, and sometimes it can appear at the most inopportune moments. The excellent news is that some home remedies work just as well.
Calcium - While it may seem that a home remedy for heartburn would have to be made by creating an elaborate homemade concoction, relief can come from taking something as simple as a dose of Calcium. Long known for building healthy bones and warding off Osteoporosis, few people know that Calcium is a primary ingredient in many over the counter antacids and can work well at calming heartburn.
Licorice - This is also another past time favorite heartburn remedy in its natural state. Licorice in the form of tea and herbal supplements have been known to work well at reducing heartburn. It should be noted that eating large amounts of licorice candy is not known to aid in heartburn reduction.
Milk - Another effective heartburn remedy that many people have used over the years is milk. While its indeed true that a good glass of milk can help calm stomach acid, a few words of caution should be noted. When it comes to using this staple as a remedy, the higher the fat content in the milk the more stomach acids will be produced after a few hours. That is why it is recommended to choose lower fat dairy. Either 1% or Skim (Fat-Free) are the best choices.
Chewing Gum - It may seem surprising, but there is also a straightforward remedy for diffusing stomach acid in the form of chewing gum. Believe it or not, as the gum is being eaten the amount of saliva a person has in their stomach increases. Saliva is a natural barrier for stomach acids and can also aid in keeping the heartburn out of the esophagus with each swallow.
Baking Soda - Additionally, the baking cabinet offers another natural remedy in the form of baking soda. Mixing one teaspoon of baking soda and water ( a few drops of lemon juice can be added as well) can offer an excellent home remedy. Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate, and this mixture is a widely used as a home mixture that calms stomach acid rather quickly. While this remedy can work well, it should not be used more than three times a day.
There are also a few natural ingredients in certain teas that can work rather well. Mint leaf and ginger are both well known for their acid-reducing properties and can be readily found in tea forms in most major health food stores.
